“Indisputably one of the world’s finest vocalists”
DJ RITU MBE, RESONANCE FM, LONDON
Synopsis
Martin Alvarado is world renowned as tango’s Voice of Buenos Aires. He has been performing for over 20 years and is about to start his 54th international tour.
His international career took off after he was heard singing in the street in Barcelona and invited to perform in Finland. Within two months of arriving in Finland, which has its own tango tradition and music, he was performing with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra.
His continued work in Finland has led to him collaborating with many leading artists in the jazz and tango world, including pianist and bandoneonist Mikko Helenius with whom he has toured the UK several times. Mikko is a well, known talent in Finland and has rare ability to play both his instruments simultaneously. With Martin, their performances are highly improvised with no two shows the same.
Together, with Martin performing on guitar, they perform a mix of rarely heard tunes from the godfather of tango Astor Piazzola, all-time tango favourites, folk songs and ballads from Argentina and South America and also some of Martin’s own compositions, including Finnish tangos that have been given an Argentine makeover and even a tribute to a football hero – well it would not be Argentina without some reference to football!
Their performances take the audience on an emotional journey with great pathos alongside moments of humour and banter.
